Live at Yoshiwara

from Ghost Rhythms

""The music here walks a wide loop around Soft Machine and Magma, Univers Zero and Henry Cow, Miles Davis and Miriodor, Van Der Graaf Generator and Art Zoyd. It's impeccably assembled and played, while freely indulging the more insane aspects of progressive rock, avant-garde chamber music, and electric jazz. (...) Despite the musical sophistication and adventure on Live at Yoshiwara, this music is extremely accessible to a wide swathe of listeners. Its release signals the magnificent arrival of Ghost Rhythms on American shores. Get it now."
Thom Jurek, Allmusic

"With their first release on an international label and with a decade of work behind them, Ghost Rhythms, who are one of the world’s lesser-known, great, boundary-blurring ensembles, take a step into the spotlight..."

PRAISE for LIVE AT YOSHIWARA :

"There are bands operating in the avant-jazz realm that are all-out crazy energy all the time. Then there are bands like Ghost Rhythms that are more subtle and subversive, lulling listeners into a sense of familiarity with the music and gradually building up to something outside mainstream expectations, so you might not notice how different they are all at once. Live at Yoshiwara starts with a gradual fade-in of not-quite-distinguishable voices and distant notes, then a meditative solo of slow chords. “Maohee” blends an insistent bass line slightly reminiscent of Magma with melodies and chords from a variety of instruments including accordion, bari sax, cello, and guitar. It’s a little outside the box, but not far off from something Snarky Puppy might come up with. On “La Chose” we get a funky rhythm that adds rhythmic layers which hint more at polyphony than R&B, though it isn’t until two-thirds of the way through the piece when interlocking parts hinting at math-rock and Philip Glass work into the mix. With “Nattes” they delve further into Glassy territory with offset rhythms on piano, cello, accordion, and alto sax that combine into an ever-changing tonality that gradually morphs into something more energetic and melodic. Ghost Rhythms presents music which is rhythmically complex but doesn’t hit you over the head with that complexity. Their method is more subtle, and has features in common with Claudia Quintet."
Jon Davis, Exposé Music

""The tracks are reminiscent of composer Carla Bley, whose often cheeky sublimations of other genres allows her to create jazz fusion that doesn’t sound like jazz fusion – a difficult balancing act that Ghost Rhythms has clearly mastered.
Eagled-eyed film fans will recognize the “venue” as a club from director Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. That and liner notes that list performances taking place at “Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich, 1916” and at “200 Motels, Los Angeles, 1971,” not to mention “A Dream, Baltimore, 1849,” indicate a certain irreverence in outlook – always a welcome development in music this skillfully written and performed. Live at Yoshiwara is music made at a high level, but with an accessibility and humor that makes it cracking entertainment as much as high art."
Michael Toland, The Big Take Over

"In addition to the chamber jazz suggested by this combination, they make stops in rock, funk and modern jazz territory. It's a fun ride, full of energy and variety. Despite the elaborate conceptual setup, it is arty rock at its unpretentious best."
Mike Sullivan, All about Jazz
